Schultz' Furore at Flag Foul-Play
January 30, 2012
The Federal Member for Hume, Alby Schultz MP is outraged following the events on Australia Day last week where individuals were filmed desecrating the Australian Flag during the Australia Day riots in Canberra.
“The disgraceful actions of individuals who burnt and spat on the Australian National Flag has demonstrated insurmountable contempt for our Nation and its’ citizens” Alby said.
“I am further outraged that these irresponsible actions by some minority groups are sacrosanct from criticism within some sections of the Canberra media. Have they conveniently forgotten about the sacrifices made by Australians under the Flag over the decades to establish democratic freedoms which are being abused by pockets of radicals?” Alby added.
“In my opinion, the desecration of our National Flag should be punishable as a criminal offence and I consider it the responsibility of both sides of politics to enact legislation which will hold those who behave so disrespectfully to account” Alby said.
“The Australian National Flag is the paramount symbol of our Nation under which many men and women have fought and died across the decades. The Flag represents Australia and its’ people and ought to be afforded an appropriate level of protection under law” Alby said.
“This will not only ensure the protection of the Australian National Flag but ultimately, our national sovereignty” Alby concluded.
